Your screen shows a photo in millions of colours and near-infinite tonal shades. A laser on wood, slate or leather has maybe a dozen usable shades between the material's lightest and darkest possible mark. That narrow range is the single most precious resource in the whole job - and a busy background spends it on things nobody is looking at.
Three separate problems stack up when you engrave a photo with its background intact:
- It steals tonal range. Dithering and grayscale both map the photo's brightness onto the material's few available shades. A bright sky, a dark room or a patterned wall pulls the tone curve toward its own values, so your subject's face gets fewer shades to work with and looks flat.

Pure white behind the subject is clean, but it can also look abrupt - a head floating with a hard line where the neck meets nothing. Two gentle alternatives often suit the material better than a stark cutout.
A soft vignette
Fade the edges of the subject into the background with a soft radial vignette instead of a crisp boundary. On wood especially, a vignette lets the portrait dissolve into the natural grain, which reads as intentional and hand-finished rather than cut-and-pasted. It is the single most flattering treatment for a face on a light-marking material.
A solid or graded backdrop
Instead of white, flatten onto a mid-gray or a light gradient. A gray backdrop engraves as a light, even fill that frames the subject like a studio portrait and hides any minor edge fringing.
