A cluttered background is the quiet killer of photo engravings. It steals the material's limited tonal range, adds visual noise around your subject and burns for minutes with nothing to show for it. Cut it out first and every other setting gets easier.

Why a busy background ruins an engraving

Your screen shows a photo in millions of colours and near-infinite tonal shades. A laser on wood, slate or leather has maybe a dozen usable shades between the material's lightest and darkest possible mark. That narrow range is the single most precious resource in the whole job - and a busy background spends it on things nobody is looking at.

Check the mask against a contrasting colour

View your cutout against both black and white before you commit. Fringing - a faint halo of leftover background - is invisible on a checkerboard but obvious against a solid colour, and it engraves as a dirty outline. Erase it now, not on the material.

For dark pets on a dark background, or blond hair on a bright one, the AI has the least contrast to work with. Bump the photo's contrast before the cutout so the model can see the boundary, then relax it afterward.

What a transparent PNG means to a laser

This is the concept that trips up most beginners, so it is worth stating plainly: to a laser, transparent means "do not burn". A PNG stores an alpha channel - a hidden map of how opaque each pixel is - and engraving software reads fully transparent pixels as blank space. Wherever your image is see-through, the machine simply skips: the laser never fires, and the material is left exactly as it started.

Flatten to white or keep transparent

Flattening to white is the sane default because it removes ambiguity - every downstream tool and every laser treats white as "do not burn on dark-marking material" and as the bright end of the tone scale everywhere else. Keep transparent when you specifically want bare material to show and you trust your engraving software to handle the alpha channel the way you expect. When in doubt, flatten to white and you will never be surprised by an unexpected border.

Vignettes and solid backdrops

Pure white behind the subject is clean, but it can also look abrupt - a head floating with a hard line where the neck meets nothing. Two gentle alternatives often suit the material better than a stark cutout.

A soft vignette

Fade the edges of the subject into the background with a soft radial vignette instead of a crisp boundary. On wood especially, a vignette lets the portrait dissolve into the natural grain, which reads as intentional and hand-finished rather than cut-and-pasted. It is the single most flattering treatment for a face on a light-marking material.

A solid or graded backdrop

Instead of white, flatten onto a mid-gray or a light gradient. A gray backdrop engraves as a light, even fill that frames the subject like a studio portrait and hides any minor edge fringing. A subtle top-to-bottom gradient adds depth without competing with the face. Both give you a finished, deliberate panel rather than a bare silhouette.

The rule of thumb: the more the material has its own character - wood grain, slate texture - the more a soft vignette suits it. The flatter and more uniform the material - acrylic, coated metal - the better a clean solid backdrop looks.

Hand off to the dithering step
